About University of Debrecen

Hungary is a relatively small country of 10 million people, which has seven neighbours and one of the longest histories of European nations with a statehood of over 1100 years. As a member of the European Union and at the crossroards of East and West, it is a very accessible location and an ideal base to explore all of Europe.  

Debrecen is the largest city outside Budapest and has over 200, 000 inhabitants. At a convenient distance of 250 km to the East from the capital, Debrecen is a cultural, economic and scientific centre of the region and a renowned university town.

With a student body of about 28, 500 the University of Debrecen is one of the largest institutions of higher education in Hungary today.

The cooperation of fourteen faculties ensures the multidisciplinary background guaranteeing the University a leading role as a research and education institution, and the intellectual center of Eastern Hungary.

In 2007 our institution was the first to receive the highest degree of the Higher Education Qualification Prize awarded to the most reputable Hungarian higher education institutions.

The University conducts its programs according to the European Qualifications Framework of the Bologna Process. Thus diplomas attained at the University of Debrecen are generally accepted in the countries of the European Union. Moreover, all our programs are accredited by the Hungarian Accreditation Board which is part of the European Accreditation Board.

Medical programs are accredited by the World Health Organization (WHO), the State Education Department (NY, USA), Medical Board of California, Medical Councils of India (a qualifying exam is compulsory), Israel, Ireland, Iran, Norway and the United Arab Emirates.

The University of Debrecen has specific language requirements for international students, especially for English-taught programs. Here is an overview of these requirements:

For Programs Taught in English:

  1. IELTS (International English Language Testing System):

    • Minimum overall score of 5.5 to 6.5, depending on the program. Programs in competitive fields, like Medicine or Pharmacy, may require higher scores (6.0 or above).

  2. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language):

    • Minimum score of 70–90 on the internet-based test (iBT), though some programs, particularly in the health sciences, might require 90 or higher.

  3. Cambridge English Qualifications:

    • Cambridge First (B2): Accepted for many undergraduate programs.
    • Cambridge Advanced (C1) and Proficiency (C2): Typically accepted for most programs and may be preferred for competitive fields.

  4. PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic):

    • Minimum score of 50 to 58 for undergraduate and 58 or higher for certain graduate programs.

  5. Duolingo English Test:

    • Some programs may accept Duolingo scores, but students should verify this option with the admissions office, as it's less commonly accepted than IELTS or TOEFL.

Exemptions:

  • Students from English-speaking countries or those who have completed secondary or tertiary education in English may be exempted from these language requirements, though this varies by faculty.

For Programs Taught in Hungarian:

  • Students must demonstrate proficiency in Hungarian if the program is taught in Hungarian. The university offers Hungarian language courses for those who need to meet this requirement.
