About Universiti Malaysia Perlis
Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) is Malaysia's 17th public institution of higher learning. Approved by the Malaysian Cabinet in May 2001, it started off as a university college - Kolej Universiti Kejuruteraan Utara Malaysia (KUKUM). The institution’s first intake comprised 116 engineering students who began classes in June 2002. In February 2007, KUKUM was upgraded to a full-fledged university and renamed Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP). The university is one of only four technical universities in Malaysia.
With a vision to become an internationally competitive technical university, UniMAP’s raison d’etre was to produce highly-skilled engineers to fulfil and support Malaysia’s Industrial Blueprint (Pelan Induk Perindustrian Negara). Over the years, we have remained true to this vision, strengthening our mission to produce exemplary individuals who will contribute to the Nation’s development and industry competitiveness agenda.
With the core values of Knowledge, Sincerity, Excellence, UniMAP’s objectives are translated into its commitment to key institutional agenda and stakeholders. The objectives recognise and place emphasis on sustainability perspectives and the university’s contribution to the agenda, both directly and indirectly:
STUDENT
To develop holistic future leaders through well-rounded education based on practical application of knowledge and skills
MTUN (Malaysian Technical University Network)
To play a role in tertiary TVET to support the nation’s industrial growth.
COMMUNITY
To be the catalyst for the sharing of knowledge and technology with society.
FACULTY AND STAFF
To provide supportive environment that empowers intellectual and professional growth.
RESEARCH
To generate new knowledge through strategic research endeavours for the benefit of humanity.
CAMPUS CULTURE
To create an intellectual environment conducive to the sharing of knowledge, views, culture and ideas in pursuit of sustainability.
NATION BUILDING
To contribute to the nation’s socioeconomic development and enrich the Malaysian culture.
UniMAP currently has around 13,000 local and international students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels of study, with an alumni size in excess of 25000 all around the world. We offer 33 engineering, engineering technology and technology bachelor degree programmes, two business and one new media degree programmes, also at the bachelor level. We also run six diploma level engineering programmes, whose graduates can proceed to bachelor degree programmes at the university. At postgraduate level, both taught courses and research programmes of study are available to choose from. Research grants may be available, depending on areas of research and grants availability.
As a technical university, learning includes practical-oriented or lab-intensive components, especially in engineering technology and technology programmes. Our technology degree programmes run on the 3u1i mode, where students spend three years at the university and one year in industry. Additionally, our close collaboration with more than 100 industry partners across the board enables the university to leverage on industry’s facilities for students skills and technological know-how, while both parties enjoy the sharing of the latest technological innovation to propel further research and enhance the teaching-learning experience at the university. Post-COVID19, many of our programmes run on hybrid mode, while F2F learning is still accorded to practical-oriented programmes or part of programmes.
In addition to content knowledge, the university strives to equip student with values deemed pertinent to their growth and development. These are encapsulated in UniMAP’s core values of Knowledge, Sincerity and Excellence – translated into action through both the extra and co-curricular activities offered to students as a way to enrich their campus experience. One of these is the university’s flagship Seven Pillars programme, which aims to enhance students’ personality development. Another is the Service Learning Malaysia University for Society (SULAM) programme, which covers both curriculum and co-curriculum components in inculcating a culture of service amongst students. Both programmes aim to produce holistic graduates who are entrepreneurial and balanced, and who will become exemplary individuals making significant contribution to society, both at local and global levels. At present, UniMAP is engaged in more than 50 community projects, providing authentic opportunities for both students and staff to engage in social entrepreneurship, and a sturdy foundation for students to grow from for when they leave the security of the university and venture into the ‘real world’.
