The New School requires all applicants whose first language is not English to demonstrate English language proficiency through standardized test scores. They accept the following tests:

- Cambridge English (C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency): Minimum score of 191
However, applicants who have completed four years of high school where English was the primary language of instruction do not need to submit test scores, unless they took ESL courses. Additionally, students who have completed two full semesters of college-level coursework in English may also be exempt from submitting these tests
